2010

Moritz Baumgartel

Moritz holds a B.A. in Social Sciences from the Roosevelt Academy in Middelburg, the Netherlands, where he studied international law, international relations and sociology. He is currently enrolled at Utrecht University where he is pursuing a Master in Public International Law. Generally interested in ideas that challenge the idea of the state as the only relevant actor in politics, Moritz is at the moment finishing his Master thesis on enforcement of human rights law at the inter-state level. He has also undertaken research on networks in international relations and the self-determination movement in Kosovo.

Moritz's native languages are German and Serbian, and he speaks also English, French and Dutch.

Catie Scott


Catie Scott interns at CRRC-Azerbaijan. Catie is finishing her B.A. in political science, economics, and policy studies at Grinnell College, a liberal arts school in the Midwest. During college she has been involved in diverse array of activities: interning at the Moscow Carnegie Center, working as a community organizer in rural Iowa, researching political attitudes toward the Maoist movement and activism of the American Nepali immigrant community, and assisting the production of an off Broadway musical in Manhattan. After graduation she plans to pursue a doctorate in political economy.

Alina Aznauryan


Alina comes from Yerevan, Armenia and she is currently enrolled in Master’s program at the Center for Social Sciences, Tbilisi State University. She also has medical background and earned Master's degree in Public Health.

Laurene Aubert


Laurene is finishing her Master in European and International Studies at the Grenoble Political Science Institute. She did her first year of Master as an exchange student at the University of Amsterdam. Laurene’s Master's thesis is on the relations between the European Union, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Laurene has volunteered to teach English in Southern Thailand. She was awarded several scholarships for projects focusing on Women in India and the Saga in Iceland.

Laurene speaks French and English, and she is learning German, Russian and Spanish. She interns at CRRC-Armenia.

David McArdle


Davis is currently studying for an M.Ph.l in Russian and East European Studies at the University of Oxford. Prior to this, David obtained a law degree from the University of Aberdeen, a postgraduate diploma in Russian language from the University of Glasgow and an M.L.H in International Security Studies from the University of St. Andrews. His research currently focuses on post-Soviet de facto states and international laws governing secession. He has interned at ECMI (Tbilisi) in 2007 and has studied Russian language in Kaliningrad and Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan).

Elisa Perry

Elisa Perry is currently a second-year Masters student at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, focusing on security studies and the Caucasus. She holds a BA from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where she studied international relations and Russian language and literature. Prior to graduate school, Elisa worked as an aide to the United States House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs, where she focused on U.S. relations with international organizations and international human rights issues. A native of Massachusetts, Elisa speaks French and some Russian. Her research interests include post-Soviet state security, NATO and public international law.

Malte Viefhues


Currently, Malte is a B.A. student in political sciences at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris. He joined CRRC's fellowship program in February 2010 as part of his undergraduate studies. Prior to that, he worked for a year on solar energy projects in Burkina Faso, in which he is still actively engaged today. Malte is involved in different social projects both at home and abroad. Amongst others, he helped to set up an educational center in rural Morocco and organized an annual music festival and a monthly parlour game club for young people in his hometown in Northern Germany. He has done internships at the Aspen Institute Germany and the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies.

In addition to his native German, he speaks French, English and studies Russian. His research interests include the nexus between energy politics, democracy and social policy, and the transformation process in the CIS countries.

Jonne Catshoek

Jonne Catshoek holds an MA in International Relations from King's College London, specialising in Conflict Prevention and Diplomacy. In addition, he obtained an interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree in International Organizations and International Relations from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). He also studied European Studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris.

Prior to joining CRRC, Mr. Catshoek conducted extensive research and field work for conflict management and peacebuilding organizations in the Caucasus, Europe and Africa. Amongst others, he worked as Research Assistant for International Crisis Group (Dakar), as Peace Mediation and Dialogue Assistant for the Crisis Management Initiative (Brussels) and as Research Intern with the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (Tbilisi). His main areas of interest include conflict mediation, human rights issues and EU integration.

Jonne speaks English, French, German and Dutch and is currently studying Georgian at Malmö University.

Therese Svensson

Therese Svensson holds a Master's degree in Political Science and a Bachelor's degree in Peace and Conflict Studies, both from Umea University, Sweden. She spent one semester studying in Torun, Poland and has previously worked at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights in Warsaw, Poland. In Sweden, she has been active in human rights organizations such as Amnesty International. She spent two months in Georgia in the spring of 2009 collecting material for her master thesis, which deals with NGO-state relations after the Rose Revolution. Her main research interests revolve around the intersection of civil society and democratization in Eastern Europe.

Jesse Tatum

Jesse Tatum holds a M.Sc. in European Studies with Translation from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK, and a B.A. in International Studies from Portland State University. Previously, he was a translator for the Groupe de sociologie politique européenne at Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg, France, and taught English in France and in China. His current research interests include the EU's external relations and political trends in the Caucasus and Central Asia. He is the interview editor for the Caucasian Review of International Affairs (CRIA).

2009

Julia Hon

Julia Hon received her B.A. in Russian Literature and Language from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004. After graduating, she wrote grants for community health programs in Chicago before going to Russia in 2006, where she served as the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at Moscow State Regional University, as well as participated in volunteer projects, attended conferences, and gave trainings around Russia and Ukraine. Julia has also studied and taught in South America. She is currently a Master's student in Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. Julia's academic interests include education policy, language issues, ethnic and national conflict and civil society. She is thrilled to be in the Caucasus and working at CRRC, and is also looking forward to traveling around the region, trying out the local cuisine and learning a bit of Georgian during her time here.

Robia Charles

Robia Charles is a California native who holds a B.A. from the University of California, Davis where she studied Russian and Mathematics. She has a M.A. in Eurasian an Russian Studies from the European University of St. Petersburg, Russia and a M.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at UC Berkeley and also currently an affiliated doctoral student at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science at the Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Germany. Prior to joining CRRC, Robia was employed as a Graduate Student Instructor at UC Berkeley, as a community organizer in Northern California, and as a limnological researcher in both Tanzania and Siberia. Robia's academic interests include nationalism and the intersection of politics and religion, especially in post-Soviet Eurasia. In her spare time she loves to travel, study languages and juggle. She is very excited to be in Georgia for the first time and to work at CRRC.

Cemal Özkan

Cemal Özkan is a recent post graduate from SOAS, University of London (MA Intl and Comparative Legal Studies) where he concentrated his studies on Rule of Law, Constitutionalism and transitional reforms in post-socialist countries. Having attained a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences and Russian from Södertorn University College in Stockholm, Sweden, he spent a short period of time at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul where he conducted a field research on the migration pattern of the Bulgarian Turks. He also spent two semesters at the St. Petersburg State University studying Russian. Previous work experiences include a six month internship at the Swedish embassy in Minsk, Belarus and various translation/interpretation works from Turkish to Swedish.

2008

Keeli Nelson

Keeli has a master's degree in International Affairs from American University's School of International Service in Washington D.C. and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and English from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. She has spent the past several years working for the University of California at Berkeley on international student and scholar exchange issues. This is her first time in Georgia and definitely not her last.



Sabrien Kent

Sabrien from India is a post graduate candidate in health management. She has worked on various projects in health care, such as Anaemia in childhood and utilization of maternal services in Kashmir. Moreover, Sabrien has conducted a district level household survey under reproductive and childhood program with the EPOS health care in Kashmir She has received her MBA in health management and BUMS in herbal medicine from the Jamia Hamdard University.



Reid Hamel

Reid is a demography Ph.D. student at U.C. Berkeley and has a master's degree in International Education Policy from Harvard. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Azerbaijan 3 years ago and was back in Baku last summer. She's thrilled to be in Tbilisi this year and is actively taking activity/weekend getaway suggestions. When she's not crunching numbers, Reid enjoys books, movies, and desserts of all flavors.



Melissa Scholz

Melissa Scholz is a recent graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service (M.A., German and European Studies), where she concentrated in international conflict resolution and humanitarian/refugee emergencies, particularly as applied to the Caucasus. She is a 2006 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology (B.S. International Affairs and Modern Languages, Highest Honors). Her most fulfilling previous jobs were with the Division of Biodefense tracking security issues in the FSU, and as a program coordinator for the Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs. A collegiate athlete, she loves swimming and watching sports (especially Euro 2008), as well as photography, traveling, and spending time with her family.



Dzovinar Derderian

Dzovinar Derderian is a graduate student at Georgetown University specializing in Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies in the School of Foreign Service. She graduated from Tufts University in 2007 with a double-major in International Relations and Russian and East European Studies. She has also studied at the University College London in the UK as well as Herzen State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. Previously she has worked at the International Foundation of Electoral Systems (IFES) in Washington, DC, and the Armenian International Policy Research Group in Yerevan, Armenia. Currently she is working on the fellowship papers as well as the migration project in Armenia and with NDI project in Georgia.
